Accelerating Innovation with AI Research

Research Areas

Digital Democracy and Surveillance Capitalism

My research in digital democracy focuses on the impact of digital technologies on democratic engagement and governance. It evaluates how these technologies can improve civic participation and public access to information, promoting a more inclusive and well-informed society. I explore the challenges of the digital divide, privacy concerns, and the spread of online disinformation to protect the integrity of democratic processes and public trust. At the Media Innovation Lab, my efforts are directed towards using ethical technology and digital storytelling for open innovation and community advocacy. Through an interdisciplinary approach, my work aims to tackle the intricacies of digital democracy, offering ethical, informed, and technologically adept solutions to foster a more active, transparent, and fair digital environment for civic discourse and democratic participation.

Co-creative Storytelling and AI in Combating Online Disinformation

My research on Co-creative Storytelling and AI in Combating Online Disinformation explores how combining collaborative storytelling with artificial intelligence can effectively counteract the spread of false information online. I study how AI tools can complement co-creative processes, allowing diverse groups to come together to create engaging and factually accurate narratives. This approach uses the capabilities of AI to analyse and identify disinformation trends, while human creativity ensures the stories are relatable and meaningful. My goal is to develop methods that enable communities to use storytelling as a defence against disinformation, creating a digital space where truth and transparency are at the forefront. By bringing together AI with the varied perspectives of co-creators, my research aims to improve media literacy and encourage a more informed and critical approach to public discourse, helping to reduce the impact of online disinformation and its effects on society.

Innovative Storytelling Narratives for Change and Advocacy

My research on enhancing storytelling for change and advocacy focuses on harnessing the power of human creativity, technology and narrative to drive social change and promote media literacy and advocacy. I explore how storytelling can be a powerful tool for communicating complex ideas and sparking emotional connections, making it an effective means of influencing public opinion and policy. By examining storytelling mechanics, including narrative structure, character development, and audience engagement, I seek to identify strategies that can make stories more compelling and impactful. My work involves collaborating with diverse groups to craft narratives highlighting pressing social issues, aiming to inspire action and foster a more just and equitable society. Through this research, I aim to demonstrate how storytelling can be leveraged as a dynamic force for advocacy and change, empowering individuals and communities to share their experiences and drive meaningful progress.

AI Ethics and Governance

My research in AI Ethics and Governance examines the ethical considerations and necessary governance frameworks for the responsible use of artificial intelligence technologies. I focus on the moral impacts of AI, highlighting the need for technologically effective systems while being ethical and fair. This includes analysing societal effects of AI, like bias, privacy, and accountability, to ensure these technologies benefit society. In my work on the ethical governance of AI, I push for policies and practices that ensure transparency, fairness, and inclusivity, aiming to protect human rights and dignity in our digital era. Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, I develop practical strategies that align innovation with ethical responsibility, ensuring AI addresses our time's complex challenges and works for the common good.

Convergence of AI and Open Innovation in Healthcare

My research on the convergence of AI and open innovation in healthcare systems focuses on integrating artificial intelligence with open innovation principles to enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes. I investigate how AI can be leveraged to analyse vast amounts of health data, leading to better diagnostic tools, personalised treatment plans, and more efficient healthcare services. Concurrently, I explore the role of open innovation in encouraging a collaborative ecosystem among researchers, practitioners, and patients, facilitating the sharing of knowledge and resources to drive advancements in healthcare. By examining the synergies between AI technologies and open innovation practices, my work aims to identify strategies that can improve accessibility, affordability, and healthcare quality, ultimately contributing to healthier communities and a more sustainable healthcare system. Through this research, I strive to showcase the potential of combining AI with open innovation to address modern healthcare systems' complex challenges.
